Fibromyalgia, also known as fibrositis or fibromyositis, is a syndrome involving muscular pain and stiffness, with other symptoms including generalized fatigue, depression, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep disturbances, and joint swelling. This condition is often related to chronic fatigue syndrome. The cause is not completely understood. Some researchers suggest that it may be caused by deficiencies of a neurotransmitter in the brain called serotonin. This neurotransmitter regulates both pain and non-REM sleep, a sleep disturbance commonly found in those living with fibromyalgia. Others suggest immune system abnormalities, hypothyroidism, amalgam dental fillings, parasites, or the fungus Candida albicans.
This is a very frustrating condition for both patient and practitioner. It's often misdiagnosed and treated improperly. The newly proposed criteria for diagnosing fibromyalgia is the existence of 18 tender points (nine pairs) found in the muscles. Medical treatment usually consists of common NSAIDs, low-dose antidepressants, and/or muscle relaxants, with only temporary results.
Two cases of fibromyalgia that I know of responded extremely well to the fatty acid esters found in Collastin; in fact, much better than I had anticipated. This was probably due to the fact that they had been attending to their disease for many years and were already taking many of the supportive nutrients that I would have recommended. These nutrients include co-enzyme Q10, malic acid and magnesium, lecithin, grape seed extract, and all of the antioxidant vitamins including beta carotene, C and E. Injectable or sublingual vitamin B12 can also be very helpful.
One product that has been extensively researched and used to treat fibromyalgia in Europe with excellent results is S-adenosylmethionine or SAM. It's presently difficult to obtain in the United States, but I predict it won't be long before some company makes it available to us here. It's also been found to be very effective in treating depression, liver disorders, and osteoarthritis.
Theodora's Experience with Fibromyalgia
Theodora is 66 years old and has spent most of her adult life in hospital administration. The last 20 years was spent in a very stressful supervisor position. Seventeen years ago, she developed chronic fatigue syndrome and would spend weeks at a time feeling exhausted and depressed. At times she couldn't even get out of bed for work. This condition left her with another very painful disease called fibromyalgia.
As a hospital administrator, Theodora had access to all the best medical treatments available, and she claims to have seen over 100 doctors in her pursuit for some relief. I'm afraid most of us would have given up long before this time, but hope seems to spring eternal with this lady. Three months ago she started taking the fatty acid esters found in Collastin. Within four weeks -- for the first time in seventeen years -- she was totally without pain. Two weeks later she was out walking four miles a day with no fatigue, and her outlook on life had gone from hopeful to pure joy!
