At Last Collastin Discovered

The discovery of this fascinating molecule is quite a story in itself. It actually started when a neighbor and friend of Harry W. Diehl developed rheumatoid arthritis. Harry W. Diehl was a researcher and chemist working at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, assigned to the Institute of Arthritis, Metabolic, and Digestive Diseases. His neighbor's condition deteriorated rapidly, and very quickly left him completely helpless. Harry didn't work on arthritis at NIH; his specialty was in sugars. In fact, he was instrumental in synthesizing the sugar used in developing Dr. Jonas Salk's oral polio vaccination. But he was so touched by his neighbor's condition that he decided to find a cure for arthritis - on his own, if need be. In 1962 he set up a laboratory in his own home, and for over two years he spent his weekends and evenings working by himself.

Harry believes, as do I, that he was divinely led. His experiments to find a cure for arthritis started with nice that proved to be immune to arthritis! What he was looking for was already in the common mouse! After two years of chemical sleuthing and laboratory experimenting, he finally isolated the molecule that give these mice their immunity - cetyl myristoleate. His next step was to determine if a synthetic form was as effective as the cetyl myristoleate found in the mice. After all, he didn't want to chop up a bunch of mice every time he needed an arthritis treatment. After creating the molecule from myristoleic acid and cetyl alcohol, he tested it on other laboratory animals. It proved to be just as effective. Now I wasn't in the laboratory at the moment of this discovery, but I'm sure that Harry was one happy chemist! The next thing he did was to approach the pharmaceutical industry with is wonderful discover. Harry was in for a rude awakening. He assumed that any of the these drug companies would jump at the opportunity to finish his research and develop a cure for arthritis. He was mistaken. Because his discovery occurs in nature, the product itself couldn't be patented, only its use. Without a product patent, a drug company couldn't control who manufactures it; and with no control of the market, the profits would have to be shared. None of the companies he presented it to would even consider it. Harry took this marvelous healing nutrient and put it on the shelf to collect dust, until 1991.

In 1991, Harry developed osteoarthritis in his own hands, knees and feet. And like us, he went to his medical doctor for help. Fortunately for you and I, Harry's doctor eventually told him there was nothing left that he could do for him and told him that he would just have to learn to live with the pain. Unwilling to accept this prognosis, Harry went back to his own discovery of cetyl myristoleate and made up a batch to try on himself. Within 30 days, his arthritis pain was totally gone! Even though Harry was a laboratory research scientist, his own experience motivated him to begin further studies. It was not until 1994 when he and a fellow chemist published his research in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences that the health care industry became aware of it. It still took over two years to get to the point where material sources could be identified and processing methods developed to create a commercially-available product.

There have been two clinical studies completed recently. One of them involved 431 patients with various forms of arthritis. The results were remarkable. Very significant improvement was observed in 64 percent of the individuals using the fatty acid esters found in Collastin; and 87 percent showed improvement by combining these esters with other important nutrients that will be mentioned later.

In another study comprised of 48 patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and reactive psoriatic arthritis, only tow of these individuals failed to respond. These two were found to have liver disease, one from alcohol abuse and the other from extensive steroid use. Liver dysfunction has been shown to interfere with the action of Collastin and reduce its effectiveness. In this research, Harry Diehl found that the liver acts as a storage center for cetyl myristoleate, and adequate liver function appears to be necessary for effectiveness.

On a recent morning television talk show, the hosts interviewed a representative of one of the major drug companies which manufactures cancer drugs. This new drug they were so excited about proved to be six to eight percent effective in reversing one particular type of skin cancer! Now a cure, but a significant improvement in the clinical prognosis. In contract, Collastin is a natural product with no adverse side effects and when combined with a few other natural nutrients, it's up to 87 percent effective; and still the majority of us have never heard about it. Isn't it time that safe, natural products receive the kind of coverage that these big drug companies can get for their products!

As fantastic as Collastin is, its effectiveness can be improved by another 10 to 20 percent by adding a few additional natural ingredients. In nature, we observe that nothing works or stands alone. Collastin itself has a group of fatty acid esters working with the cetyl myristoleate to increase its effectiveness. There always seems to be a collaboration, or supporting complementary action, which makes things happen. This synergistic interaction produces a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual effects.

I bring this to your attention because I have found many applications of synergism in the combining of natural remedies for the treating of my patients. If two separate substances help in the same condition, the combination of these substances usually produces a total effect far greater than the use of only one or the other of these substances.

The following is a compilation of a few of the conditions that I've treated with Collastin and some of the complementary nutrients that have improved the results. Sometimes a testimony speaks louder than any dry pathology class, so I've also included just a few to give this sometimes cerebral material a little bit of human touch. These are actual people with real stories!
