The other thing we need to look when trying to get nutrients into our cells is: are the nutrients we are getting balanced? People taking bottles of isolated nutrients, there are studies showing that taking isolated nutrients can actually do us more harm than good. You are much better off when you can - to take your nutrients in a whole food; most whole food doesn't have the nutrients though, so you actually have to look at supplementing with whole food. Isolated nutrients are not a good idea. One of the reasons that taking isolated nutrients can actually do us more harm than good is that vitamins in your body are linked to a mineral, vitamin E is linked to selenium, and vitamin C is linked to copper. If you take high doses of Vitamin C - it says right on the bottle 'ascorbic acid' - well ascorbic acid is not what Vitamin C is in our body. With vitamin C one thing you need is the bio flavanoids to even absorb it. So vitamin C is a compound with the bio flavanoids and also linked to copper. Now if you take high doses of ascorbic acid without taking these other nutrients, first of all your body is probably not going to absorb the ascorbic acid and second, when that ascorbic acid does get into the body, the ascorbic acid is going to pull the needed copper out of the tissues. So our body also needs copper to fight infection. That is why balance is extremely important and why we highly encourage whole food supplements when whole food supplements are available. Also when we look in the United States, are the nutrients, the nutrition we are taking, the nutritional supplements - actually getting into the cells. Sometimes these nutrients don't get broken down so the nutrients are not getting into the tissues. Such as vitamins undigested in the stomach, passing all the way through the intestinal track without getting digested. That is one thing that is extremely important when you look at supplements - are they bio-available. Bio-available means are they actually able to get into our cells. NEXT
